Physical Benefits of Basketball
Basketball involves a lot of starting and stopping. It is a great workout that can help you build cardiovascular endurance, improves balance and coordination, build up muscle and burn calories.

- be played all year round because it's usually an indoor sport
- be practiced alone - all you need is a ball and a hoop (and you can find a hoop in most local parks and school grounds)

Basketball Stations in PE Class
1. Ball or Dribble Tag
- While dribbling the ball, use your opposite hand to tag a group member's ball
2.Shooting Station
a. F.O.R.E.S.T. Shooting
- make sure that there are only 2 balls being shot at a time
- there should always be at least one person rebounding the ball and passing it back to the shooter
b. Mikan Drill
- standing very close to the side of the basket, aim for the corner of the box on the backboard to get the ball in the basket. Two-Four shots then switch with another person in your group
- prepares you for lay ups
3. Dribbling and Ball Handling
- make sure to use your finger pads to dribble the ball
- dribble with head up, legs bent (ready to move in different directions), and eyes
forward as much as possible
a. change directions (left, right, straight), speed (fast, medium, slow), hands (left/right) and height of the ball (low, medium and waist high)
4. Ultimate Basketball (group is split in two teams)
- Objective of the game is to pass the ball to any of your teammates on the other side of the white line (small box)
- you can not dribble or move with the ball (only pivot)
- defense prevents opposing team from receiving the ball
- once the offense loses control of the ball, the ball is turned over to the opposite team
Modifications to Ultimate Basketball
- Beginners allow players to bounce pass the ball
- Advanced players create picks or screens to allow teammates to create space away from their defenders
5. Lay up Lines
- one line rebounds the ball, the opposite line performs lay-up
- players performing lay-ups should be moving PAST the basket and NOT stop jogging/moving towards the basket after ball leaves fingers.
- players switch line once lay up or rebound is performed
Modifications to Lay up Lines
a. Advanced players bounce pass ball to player (from rebounding line) and player on
lay up line should be moving towards basket, catches ball and performs lay up
b. Beginner and Intermediate Players:
Level 1 = Easy = Shoot the ball next to basket aiming at corner of white box of
backboard
Level 2 = Intermediate = Start two steps away from Level 1 "right then left (shoot
after weight is pushed off left foot)
Level 3 = Advanced = Jog and Lay up
6. Triple Threat Stance in "Four Corners"
- In group of 3 or 4, passer with ball
- practices pivoting to create space between ball handler and defender
- practices passing (chest, bounce or overhead) in front of moving target
- ball is held close and away from defender
- Receiver will
- move to an open spot by planting opposite foot and moving to opposite direction
- have hands up and ready to catch pass
- Defender
- will practice keeping their hands in front of the ball to prevent pass OR intercept ball
