** Self Defense is defined as the right to prevent suffering force or violence through the use of a sufficient level of counteracting force or violence **
These actions that are taught in PE class are for Self Defense ONLY.
Please be mindful of your partner's safety while doing these movements to avoid accidental harm to each other by
- wearing no jewelry; removing eye glasses if going full speed
- being cautious of partner's finger nails so they don't scratch anyone.
- practicing the movements/releases slowly then progressively increasing speed
- letting your partner who is the victim know you are about to "attack her"

Don't go to new places you're not familiar with by yourself |
Common Mistakes with Your Jab
1. Not Being Thrown Enough - When punching, use your jab much more than any other punch! 2. Half Extension - Use the FULL LENGTH of your arm when you jab 3. Overcommitting - NEVER lean forward for extra power/distance 4. Lazy Retraction - Leaves you susceptible for to the overhand right/left - "A to B" then "B to A" 5. Basic Self Defense
Be aware of your surroundings Use core muscles so you are not flailing around with your upper body If someone grabs you from behind, strike the groin first Grabbing the face is a great defense as well Defend yourself from these most common attacks 1 Arm Grab - grab wrist with your opposite hand - move arm away from thumb with elbow up - Turn body away from attacker - slice downwards using core 2. Grab From Behind - grab attacker's arms and pull yourself in - step on attacker's foot with your heel - swing hips to one side - make a fist and strike the groin - pivot to attacker - interlock hands behind the neck - knee the groin upwards If you are lifted up: hold tightly and kick groin repeatedly 3. Choke Hold from the Front - lift one arm up - turn whole body to opposite side - crunch downwards, trapping attacker's hand and strike elbow to the face 4. Hair Grab from Behind (High School Only) - lock both hands on top of attacker's hands - squeeze elbows to protect the face - go under the arm and up and around - push arm forward and up to dislocate shoulder 5 . Headlock aka Rear Choke Hold (High School Only) As a victim, you must react quickly since you won't have much time breathing when in a head lock aka a rear choke hold 1. Pull the arm down to increase your airway and decrease the pressure squeezing your throat 2. Chin Down 3. Victim drops weight low and move backward 4. Opposite shoulder comes UP 5. Shoulder to attacker's Chest/sternum (Body perpendicular to attacker) 6. Quickly push out of head lock |
How to Stop a Grab to the Hijab
1. Drop Chin - Drop chin towards chest and stay calm 2. Turn Around - Turn towards attacker 3. Elbow - Strike upward to chin with your elbow as you turn! 4. Palm - Strike under chin upward with open palm 5. Knee - Knee the groin |

Overall, why is it important for students to learn and what are three things you can do (as a young teenager) to keep yourself safe?
