Volleyball Basic Rules in PE
The Serve
1. Server must serve from behind the service line (white) until after contact. (MS can move up one line)
2. Ball may be served underhand or overhand
3. A served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side (stays inbounds) for a point.
4. No blocking or attacking a serve.
Scoring
1. Rally scoring will be used (point is awarded to a team on every serve) In other words, if a team does not volley/serve the ball over the net, the opposing team may be awarded a point.
2. In Physical Education class, games are played between 8-10 min. (Usually they are played to 25 points.)
3. (Usually, games are won by 2 points if the score is 24-24) In other words, you must have two points more than the opposing team.
Rotation
1. Team will rotate each time they win the serve.
2. Players shall rotate in a clockwise direction.
3. High School - There shall be 6 players maximum on each side of the court.
4. High School = Players can specialize in front or back row. Therefore players will be subbed in game to play entire back or front row if there are too many on the court.
5. 6th Grade - There shall be 8 players maximum on each side of the court.
6. 6th Grade = Players will rotate on and off the court if there is too many people on the court.
Playing the Game (Volley)
1. Maximum of three (3) hits per side
2. Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (a block is not considered a hit)
3. Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on the other side of the serve
4. A ball touching the (white) boundary line is "good" or "inbounds"
5. A player must not block or attack a serve.
6. During a volley, if your ball hits the ceiling/wall and stays on your side, your teammates may continue to play the ball to get the ball over the net.
7. During a volley, if you or your teammate hits the ball to the opponents' ceiling/wall, your opponent's team is awarded the point.
8. The back row's primary job is to pass to the front row. Therefore the front row is responsible for getting the ball over the net.
Basic Violations or Errors
1. Foot Fault = stepping on or over the service line on a serve.
2. Hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming, throwing, etc.)
- When setting the ball, players use their finger pads to over head pass the ball to the hitters
- 6th graders may catch and throw the ball during game play
3. Touching the net with any part of the body
4. Going under the net or reaching over the net
5. Back row player jumps in front of the attack line to hit/attack/block the ball
