Behavior Change Strategies
In your notebook, write down an example of EACH of the Behavior Change Strategies (see below)
Here are examples to help you:
1. Stimulus Control - I'm not going to go by the vending machines at school, so I won't be tempted to buy junk food for lunch. (The vending machine is the cue.)
2. Change friends temporarily or permanently- I'm going to start hanging out with Sarah because she likes to exercise. (Sarah is a friend who has a good influence on your behavior.)
3. Consciousness raising - I'm going to watch a program on TV about the dangers of smoking. (The information makes the problem more real or serious.)
4. Replacement- Instead of coming home and watching TV, I'm going to come home and walk around the block 5 times. (You do things in a new or different way.)
5. Reinforcement Reward - I'm going to buy myself a new pair of jeans if I stay on my exercise program for 5 weeks. (You find ways to celebrate your progress.)
6. Contract - I'm going to write a contract that promises I will drink 8 glasses of water a day. I'm going to show it to my mom and my best friend so they can help me meet my goal. (You share your intention and desire to change with others.)
7. Recruit a partner - Jim said I could call him if I was about to smoke. He's already quit, so he knows what I'm going through. (You use the buddy system.)
8. Identify behaviors that coexist - I'm going to go to bed earlier so it's easier to get up in time to eat breakfast. (You find out what behaviors are connected to the one you want to change.)
9. Builds in pauses - I'm going to count to 10 before I grab a soda from the refrigerator. (You cat with greater care.)
10. Reminders - I'm going to leave a note on the refrigerator door to remind me to eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day. (You support yourself.)
On a Google Doc, SHARE AND SEND me your 4 specific behavior change strategies you will use to help you change your behavior by the end of the period.
PLEASE ALSO TELL ME YOUR SPECIFIC GOAL
