Hello Students!
Here, you will learn about the two basic mindsets that will shape your lives. Feel free to zoom in any images or click on them to learn more. A common misconception about mindset is that after you read and listen to these videos and facts that you should be "cured of your fixed mindset. This may not be the case since you've had your belief system for decades of your life, so it might take some time to shake it. Keep in mind: Awareness is a great step toward making a change. Enjoy! |
Fixed vs Growth MindsetThere are two types of mindsets we can cultivate. One that embraces problems as opportunities to learn, and one that avoids them, often out of fear to fail. People that avoid conflicts can be described as having a fixed mindset. Those who see problems as interesting challenges have a growth mindset. Sometimes we like to switch from one to the other. Can you provide at least three examples of how you can display a growth mindset in the classroom or in your personal life?

How students learn bestIn this funny and fast-paced "NED talk," Ned knocks out eight powerful conditions of learning that can change everything for students
Pick at least two of Ned's Great 8. Explain how it impacts you the most and why? What can you specifically do to learn at your best? An example of growth mindset: Pick up a pencil or pen with your non-dominant hand (the hand that you don't normally use). Now write a simple sentence. It is not easy to do but you may be able to recall when you were first learning to write. Even if you don't really remember, it's clear that it got easier until it became second nature. With hard work and patience, you learned! You can learn to write your name with your non-dominant hand if you put your mind to it! Can you specifically describe at least two moments in your life where you struggled with something but were ultimately successful at the end?

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn't the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of "grit" as a predictor of success.
"The separation of talent and skill is one of the greatest misunderstood concepts for people who are trying to excel, who have dreams, who are trying to do things. Talent you have naturally. Skill is only developed by hours and hours of beating on your craft." Will Smith
Can you provide three examples of a time when you or know someone that showed grit? |
